Freezing is necessary for cells to prevent transformation after serial passages and to maintain the original properties. Since the technique for cell freezing has been developing, many investigators made by themselves the cryopreservative medium by adding bovine serum and DMSO to the culture media and froze the cells slowly at -1℃/min. Nowadays the cryopreservative medium is widely commercialized and it is easier for investigators to cryopreserve the cells.
However, as investigators use more varieties of cells, we have frequently observed reduced viability and impaired proliferation after freeze-thawing. To solve these problems, we optimized the ingredients in the medium and successfully developed new cryopreservative media called LaboBanker series. Consequently LaboBankers make it possible to cryopreserve freezing intolerant cells in the deep freezer.
As, in general, the serum-free type of cryopreservative media has less ability to preserve the cells than serum-containing type, applicable cells for serum-free type are limited to freezing tolerant cells. Serum-free LaboBanker 2, however, has almost equivalent performance to serum one, and investigators can select LaboBanker 1 or LaboBanker 2 for the purpose.
